Pokemon may be more popular, but MTG is infinitely more influential.
It's surreal to see this game make a cameo in every aspect of daily life. The next president of the USA plays MTG. And while reading random (not really random) articles on property law I see these mentions (which is almost an insider joke)...
(Mt Gox was originally going to be an MTG exchange, i.e. "short for "Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange"" until they pivoted to trading Bitcoins...)
